In the year 2005 I watched
10
movies on DVD.

The Great Escape
Hasn't exactly held up the test of time, but a good movie none the less. I enjoy a "rag tag" bunch teaming up for a common goal. Being based on a true story makes it even more compelling.

White Squall
Surprisingly good coming of age movie. Full of action and emotion. Although the last scene was too melodramatic, the rest of the movie does not collapse because of the Hollywood ending.

Saved!
Scored this one a little low due to it rounding off the edges. The movie itself was fine, but they really disappointed me when they went from pointing out the hypocracy in religion to blaming it on a mean spirited person.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension
A movie that tries to be a "cult classic" by definition cannot be a "cult classic". Similar to not being allowed to give yourself a nickname.
Had to turn this train wreck off before finishing it. Kept waiting for the "cool" part, which never happened

The Cotton Club
A love letter to the roaring 20's. The music and tap dancing are worth the price of admission. I liked the music plots and the gangster plots, but neither got enough attention. Focusing on one or the other would have made a better movie.

Hide and Seek
Whoever made this movie must hate audiences because the movie insults the viewer throughout. It felt like they kept changing the rules of a game while in the middle of playing it. Dakota Fanning broods and acts generally creepy and annoying, but I've seen enough of her (isn't there another child actress out there?)
The only thing that prevented this movie from getting a 1, is the presence of Elisabeth Shue.

The Rules of Attraction
Character driven story that bogs itself down with too many characters, and not enough time to devote to each. While the main characters get time to potentially evolve, they are not as interesting as the secondary characters that get slighted.

The Thirteenth Floor
Clever take on the philosophical themes of reality versus simulation in the same vein as Matrix, Dark City or eXistenZ. All of these movies came out within a year of each other. Before, this was a fresh and exciting turn for science fiction, now it seems a little trite. Movie was still good dispite the well traveled plot and without any big name actors.

The Last of the Mohicans
Outstanding film that does not have the typical Hollywoodization of a history based tale. With the visual love letter to the North Carolina mountains, a strong willed protagonist and the sensational soundtrack, TLOTM is easy to love. While I might not love this as much as others, its still a high quality movie

Word Wars
You are not as good at Scrabble as you think you are. The folks in this documentary quit their jobs and spend all of their energy improving their Scrabble skills. With the grand prize of $25K for the national Scrabble tournament, the rewards come no where near the costs to get there.
