Crash!
Dead Hard Drive
Back up your hard drive, kids. You never know when tragedy will strike. It struck me today at work. My work computer decided not to boot up any more. Hopefully, I will have a replacement in the morning. Then I will get to spend the day getting the new hard drive to something resembling what I had before. We all know that no matter how hard you work at getting a new item to act like the old one, it is never quite the same. I backed up a lot of what I needed because there were signs of impending doom. However I have thought of about a dozen different things I should have backed up since. I hope I can get back to normal soon.
[Turn your head away Ed... Technical talk ahead!!!]
I've been playing with Amazon's S3 service for a little while, mostly using a program called 'jungledisk':
http://jungledisk.com
It's pretty cheap.
$.20/GB transfer
$.15/GB/month storage.
If you've got ~15GB worth of important documents (which is generous even if you're a prolific writer), then it costs about:
($.20 * 15) + (($.15 * 15) * $.20)
= $30.00/year to store your information.
That seems like a pretty good price for Amazon's level of reliability (redundant backup)... Even if your house burns down, you'll still have your data.
Of course, I haven't quite gotten all-onboard Amazon's service, but it does look promising.
Have you tried hitting control+alt+delete or maybe going in using safe mode? I can show you how to do both of these technical moves.
I backed up my computer the old fashioned way last night - I opened up every file and printed everything out. It only cost me two printer cartridges. Jealous?
