Get Rid of Billy Packer

With the college basketball season in full swing, I figured it was time for another anti Billy Packer post. Now that the comments on my other Billy Packer posts are growing by leaps and bounds, obviously the demand for an additional Packer tirade is warranted.

My heart goes out to anyone in the southeast region since they (we) have to endure Billy Packer not only for the national games presented by CBS, but also the regional games broadcasted by Raycom/Jefferson Pilot. Allow me to touch on a broader concept that could be the root of Billy Packer's lack of talent and the overall disdain that most college basketball spectators have for him.

If you think about what irritates you most about Billy Packer, it usually falls under the heading of either his bias or his ancient basketball philosophies. I would argue that these are merely symptoms of a larger problem. Billy Packer hates to be wrong about anything due to his self centered, Wake Forest campus-sized ego. To combat the inevitability of saying something incorrect, Billy Packer hedges his bets and eliminates any risk in any statements that he makes. He does this several ways. The first method being that he will not allow facts and evidence overturn his verdict on any matter. Second, he loves to state what has already happened by doing a hybrid "color play by play" instead of color commentary. He will also argue both sides of the same point. An ingenious way of not losing an argument. And finally, he feels that he ultimately decides what actions are good and bad. He sits at courtside like self-appointed royalty condemning actions that contradict his style, and praises the obvious plays as if the players subscribed to his daily newsletters to even fathom the correct play.

I know that my efforts will never remove Billy Packer from the college basketball sidelines due to some grandfather clause, tenure rule, or maybe some compromising pictures he has of some decision maker at CBS Sports. However, I think if we band together and revolt against this curmudgeon that obviously has no place behind a microphone, we can make college basketball a better place.

These comments are nothing like what Bones McKinney would have said.

Get Rid of Billy Packer

Whoever wrote this is a genius. I hate Packer! He always says lame stuff like "nice shot" or "bad pass" or "i question whether that was a good idea." He belongs in the same category as Dick Vitale. An Ignorant Old Fart. At least Packer didn't say that Duke could beat an NBA team but he is still terrible I question why these people have jobs and I don't!

Get Rid of Billy Packer

Thanks Steve for taking the time to not only point out that Packer is terrible for college basketball but also for backing it up with substance.

The thing I don't like about Packer is his negative comments especially when a player has made a great play. He will say things like, "Even though he made that basket, I am not so sure he shouldn't have run a couple more seconds off that clock." When a great play is made, let the viewer enjoy that moment along with the player.

I will be glad to sign any petition to have Billy Packer replaced.

I turned the mute on my tv last night watching the game. I have no respect for Billy Packer. How can a broadcaster be so bias. I will never listen to him broadcast another came as long as I live.

Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

Just watched G-Tech beat Wake on Jarrett Jack's 2 free throws in OT. Packer interviews him after the win and asks why Jack missed 2 free throws earlier in the game. Jack had no response and Packer smirks and says that he was just trying to get a laugh out of Jack. What is that? Packer is horrible. He called people the wrong name and barely made a correct statement all night. Please tell me that CBS can find someone with some knowledge for March Madness this year. Packer is the worst commentator I have ever seen and I say that having watched Bill Walton so it is a huge statement.

Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

Someone please tell me how to avoid ever listening to Billy Packer and listen to someone else do the audio broadcast. Listening to him second-guess everything the players and coaches do the entire game is revolting. I have tried audio from the radio, but TV has a delay and it doesn't work. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It is truly time for a dump Packer blog to get started. How do you do it? Who will do it? It must be done ! It is an insult to the young athletes and the public that he controls what we hear during so many big games.

Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

The Billy Packer hating needs to be renewed for '06. I cannot believe that CBS continues to let him cover games. The #1 thing I hate about his commentary is how negative he is generally and how skilled he is at pointing out the most obvious points of the game. He simply is terrible. I would rather have my three year old daughter call a game than Billy "I hate everything" Packer.

I am a Duke fan, and I know that will anger many people, but I cannot believe that Packer cannot bring himself to say one positive thing about the program. He would rather pick the eighth man on some mid-major team and hail him as the next coming of Pete Maravich than to focus on the game at hand. He's a pile of shit.

Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

Billy Packer should go. He still can't even pronounce Hansbrough. He says Hansborough and it is pronounced as Handsbro. Whenever he is doing a UNC game we turn off the sound and listen to the radio. He is almost as bad an announcer as Dick Vitale.

Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

We bought a thing that delays the radio so we can listen to the radio and watch the game at the same time (thanks, Janet Jackson, for putting that delay in). Anyway, we hate Fudge Packer. He hates Carolina AND Duke. I hate Duke, too, but they sure do have an awesome team. Packer can't just call it like it is. During a game, if Carolina makes a foul, charge, or whatever that the officials don't call, he will not just let it go. Last night, he kept referring to one of our guys fouls as a cheap foul for at least 4 more plays. It was called! They took a shot. What's the big deal. We managed to get the radio synced at that point and got some surprisingly fair calling on the Tarheel Sports Network or whatever they call Woody's thing. I heard more compliments for NC State last night from the Carolina commentator than I've hear positive comments from Fudge Packer in the past 3 years.

Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

Mr. Cash is an absolutely integral part of my ACC basketball experience. After years of exposure to his all-knowing, positive insight, I find I can't enjoy an ACC game without him providing the color. During those occasions when he isn't commenting on a game I wish to watch, I will watch the game with the sound turned off and an audio recording of Billy doing a previous game playing in the background. To complete the total "Billy experience", I have my wife hit me in the head with a hammer at halftime.

Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

I have either listened to the radio or just muted the TV with no radio for years when Packer does a game. The game passed him by 30 years ago and his personality makes it even worse. He can't admit a mistake even when the replay shows otherwise, his ACC bias is unbelievable and virtually nobody likes the guy. I was at the '87 Final Four, and we saw him and Musburger walking out of the Superdome, and he was ticked at the outcome because Knight had made him look like an idiot on national tv in the interview after the semifinal game against UNLV. Packer kept saying during the game that IU shouldn't try to run with Vegas, and they were creating a tempo they could not hope to keep up with. This is where he shows what a complete IDIOT he is. If a team is pressing you and trying to dicate tempo - as Vegas was doing - what are you supposed to do when you have a 3 on 1 break, pull it out and milk the shot clock. No, you take advantage of the numbers and burn Vegas for trying to press you.

I will do the same thing for the Final Four this year that I do every year. I will mute the TV, turn on the radio and listen to someone who is genuinely enthusiastic about the game - Bill Raftery.

SEND IT IN!

If Billy Packer knew as much as he thinks he does, he would be a Hall of Fame coach. I am tired of hearing what he thinks ought to be done with Hall of Fame coaches or those that will be Hall of Fame coaches on the sidelines.

I hate Bill Paccker. Did anyone catch the 25yrs of shining moments or whatever that lead up was to this year's selection show. During one of the MSU-Kentucky highlights from last year, Paccker is seen highfiving a Kentucky player... from his broadcast chair... after Kentucky sent it to double OT. His bias against the Big Ten is unbelievable! And from these other posts, he pretty much hates all other schools as well. I mute all games he and goon-boy Nanz do. Shame on CBS... Billy Paccker is awful!

Billy (Fud&%e) Packer has absolutely no business broadcasting college basketball. His so-called stats on the selection show were worthless. (Note to Billy, Maryland won a national title a couple of years ago...that's a trend over the years, do they deserve to get into the tournament?) Packer has no knowledge about mid-major teams, their conferences, and college basketball in general. Get him off of television and my life would be fulfilled. OUT. Jim Nantz is pathetic too. Great job cutting Littlepage off twice, as he was trying to congratulate the 65 teams. REAL Professional

John,

It may look like Packer likes UNC and Duke, but trust me, he hates everyone. He has an uncanny knack for making every basketball fan think that Packer hates their team. One of the benefits of being the most negative person in the universe.

Wake Forest fans (his alma mater) even say he hates them, so no school is safe from his ire.

I like how Packer says that no mid majors should be in the tournament!!! How hes says that any missouri valley team couldnt compete (well not in those exact words but close) with a middle of the pack big east team. Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

As a Bradley University alum, I was there (In the old barn) in 1981 when Bradley was unjustly snubbed by the NCAA and Dave Gavitt, the Big East's cheerleader for life. The great combo of Mitchell Anderson and David Thirdkill were relagated to also-ran status in the NIT, and Dick Versace had to wait again to get his just rewards. Bradley easily trounced the competition and sent Purdue packing in the NIT finals that year.

Nothing was sweeter than seeing a composed and talented Bradley Team dispatch Kansas last night with talent and poise, and not a last second prayer. Billy Packer can kiss my butt.

Go Bradley Braves! The Mid-Major alumni of the World will be watching and rooting for you against Pitt in the second round.
A victory over Pitt would be sweet vindication for us all!

Man, too bad all these undeserving, small-conference schools got at-large bids. Just think how much better the tourney would be if Maryland and Cincy were in it. FIRE BILLY PACKER....HE'S AS BAD ON THE AIR AS HIS ALMA MATER IS ON THE COURT.

Screw Billy Packer

Packer's arrogance is surpassed only by his ignorance. A couple of seasons back, he insulted the classy Phil Martelli of St. Joe's and his 29-1 Hawks by saying they didn't deserve to be a #1 seed. Now, it's the Colonial and Missouri Valley conferences that are on Packer's hit list (and pretty boy Nantz's too). Does he ever even watch a game played in these conferences? Ask Roy Williams if G. Mason deserved a bid. Looks like Bradley and Wichita State knocked off four of Packer's 'Power Conference' teams too. I guarantee you this: it won't register at all with Billy who doesn't realize that the reason why his Power Conferences win all those tournament games is because they get all the bids and the highest seeds. A college hoops junkie's dream: a Final Four announce team of Gus Johnson & Bill Raftery.

This sorry excuse of a man is the CBS go to guy. You have got to be kidding me. I know it sounds harsh, and believe me I am not a violent man, but if someone shot him in the face at point blank range..... I would make that day a National holiday. Packer could not hold Raftery's jockstrap. Wait a minute Brokeback Packer would probably enjoy getting in his jockstrap. By the way, my extreme hatred for Packer has been burning a hole in my stomach for years and get this.......

Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

I am so glad to have found this website. I am so tired of Billy Packer. He is possibly the worst color analyst basketball has ever seen. Bill Walton of the NBA even has more talent than this guy. I truly feel bad for Jim Nantz (even though he's not that great himself) who has to sit next to this ignorant (Bleep) during the entire college basketball season. Nantz must get extremely frustrated when his sidekick Billy repeats every word he says or complains about the officiating the entire game.

As I was watching a game during this year's (2006) tournament, Billy boy complained about the officials the entire time. I finally had to put the T.V. on mute just to enjoy the game.

If you ask me, Billy Packar is a glorified fan who somehow brown-nosed his way into broadcasting, and wouldn't know the difference between a 1-3-1 diamond press versus a 2-3 zone if it hit him in the face.

CBS, PLEASE GET RID OF BILLY PACKER SO I CAN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT ONCE AGAIN!

Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

Billy Packer is a Howard Cosell wantabee. At least that is what CBS hopes, to boost their ratings. The difference between Howard and Packer is Howard knew what he was talking about, because Dandy Don would not let him get away with less. Al McGuire was Packer's Dandy Don once upon a time, but no way is Jim Nance a Don Meredith, to help keep Packer honest. His lack of knowledge of and bias against Missouri Valley Conference was evident before the tourney because of the fact he never saw any MVC teams play during the year. His comments inflame both teams and fans. For example, in the closing minutes of the Florida-Villanova game when Florida had the game won, Packer said the reason Villanova lost was they were tired because of the previous Boston College game. So, does he mean Florida did not play at all before and given an unfair advantage, or played a patsy like nationally ranked Georgetown? Does Packer mean Villanova is not well conditioned, does not have heart, or needs Billy Packer to give them an excuse to lose on national television? How do you think Florida and Villanova fans feel about Packer's end of the game comments? He ruins a good basketball game. As I said before though, he is Howard Cossell wantabee and CBS will never get rid of him. Maybe Bill Raftery could play the Dandy Don role! I loved Raftery's comment about UConn's Denham Brown's reverse layup tying George Mason at buzzer at the end of regulation, he said, "What can Brown do for you!?" Raftery is the anti-Packer, a ray of sunshine versus negative ignorance.

Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

I have had to deal with Fudge since the mid seventies when he and Thacker and Bones did ACC games here in southwest virginia. Like the Previous poster said, Al McGuire called Billy out whenever he made one of his usual idioti statements. My favorite one is when he compliments coaches for "working the officials" like it's an important part of game stategy. If you ask me it's things like that that are wrong with college b'ball now. Coaches ought to be T'eed up when ever they piss and moan during a game. Didn't Packer have a run-in with an intern or work-study student at some pre-game function a couple years ago? Dump him please!!

Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

I like this thing Packer does: He'll say "it's time for Coach ABC to put so-and-so back into the game" as if he's making the call, all the while the player has already been to the bench to check in. Trying to make himself look like a genius when a few seconds later, the player comes into the game! Hilarious!

Posted by: Kevin at March 31,2006 17:36
Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

Props to Florida for playing a great game. That being said...Did anyone catch Packer's call when UCLA went into a full court press in the second half. Al Horford finds himself with the ball in the backcourt facing a double team. The 10 second clock is winding down. Horford tries to beat the double team (and the clock) by dribbling down the sideline and steps out of bounds. Packer goes on and on about how Horford is so talented that Billy Donavan can use like that to break a full court press! What the fuck was Packer just watching? Later in the second half CBS breaks for the under 8 minute TV timeout. Coming back from the break Packer states what a genius Donavan is for calling that timeout to remind his players to keep there focus. Hello you fucking dickhead! Of course, it's a miracle Packer got a word in edgewise seeing as how his lips were so firmly wrapped around Joakim Noah's dick the whole game. I'm a Bruin and therefore crushed that they lost. Still, it's especially hard to be a gracious loser and congratulate the (well deserved) winners when you've had to listen to that piece of shit Packer rambling on and on and on as if this Florida team were the greatest one in the history of the NCAA tournament.

Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

I just watched the championship game, and I must say, I've always pretty much hated Packer, but now I really want his ass gone! He's so negative, and he makes comments that are so stupid and obvious...tonight when UCLA couldn't seem to get it's deficit down below 16-18 pts, Packer kept saying "they won't be able to come back if they keep trading baskets"...duh! He keeps calling Florida's coach "Dunnevin", instead of Donovan. He doesn't get excited and show enthusiasm when a kid makes an incredible play or shot..he sucks! Him and Vitale should both retire ASAP!!!

Re: Get Rid of Billy Packer

I hate Billy Packer with a passion. The inept moron tried to bring a non-existent football term into the championship game....."defensive half-back!" What the hell is that? And I echo the comment above.....He must've said at least 4 times in the 2nd half, "they can't get back in the game by trading baskets." Idiot! When a team makes consecutive baskets, he acts like they are playing their best basketball all year and the opposition is way "out of sorts" defensively. e.g. "UConn has made baskets their last two times down the floor Jim. Jay Wright really needs to call a timeout and settle his team down on defense." Fag. Worst of all is his freakin' negativity. "He ended up making the shot but I'm not sure that's the play the coach wanted." or, "Again, they made the 3 but with plenty of time left on the clock, they don't need to be taking those shots." I echo everyone's resentment and ask CBS to carefully consider its position on Billy Packer as lead analyst.

It's good to see there are so many folks out there who have the same opinion of Pacer that I have. I've been watching college basketball for many years, and as a young man, I had to put up with Packer and Thacker, the most inane pair of sports announcers I've ever had to listen to. Thacker was even worse than Packer. Thank God he didn't move on to bigger and better things. I yelled at the TV when those two were on back then and I've yelled ever since at Packer. He should have been removed years ago. I'll never understand how he's lasted this long. He belabors the obvious, talks incessantly, and regularly misreads the action. In short, he's inept. Get rid of him before he drives us all crazy!

My favorite comment of the final four weekend was when he said he was impressed with Noah's hustle down the court. The only problem was the Noah never left the offensive half of the court. That isn't hustle. That is Cherry-picking you moron. I didn't care which team won the tourney, but you have to hate the fact that who ever does win will have the entire CBS crew talking how they predicted it the whole time.

I love this stuff and who ever came up with this is right on the money. I am a high school basketball official and nothing grates me more then to listen to the so called 'experts', make calls like 'the refs missed that travel', and 'there was a lot of contact' and that should not have been a blocking foul and the like. They just don't get it, yes, they do show their bias, and, oh by the way, take that other ACC individual Seth Davis with you. He is starting to turn into another one in the Packer mold. Also, if you look at history, wasn't Packer run out of Wake Forest because he totally destroyed that program and it took them years to recover? What makes this game great.

It never ends. Billy Packer is a bad or worse than ever. Darrell Arthur makes an important basket and BP says it's a bad shot, thinks Arthur should have stepped back for the 3. I've never seen a game where it was so obvious that the anouncer wanted one team to win...Memphis. ...I take that back, whenever Billy Packer does a game it is obvious he wants one team to win. He is so terrible, I can't believe they still let him work. Why? He is a complete idiot. Think about it, this string of comments here has been going on for years.
